Rotor Design Solutions is delighted to have been asked to contribute to the 100th edition of Race Engine Technology magazine.
Director, Dan Davey was heavily involved in their article focusing on improving the efficiency of fuel pumps within the motor racing industry.
Rotor Design Solutions can offer methods to improve the efficiency of fuel pumps through the optimisation of the rotor geometry. By designing a more sophisticated profile shape, the fuel can be delivered at a higher pressure, resulting in an improved atomisation and an associated boost in engine performance. At the higher pressures the back leakage from the outlet of the pump would become more significant, by using a more sophisticated profile shape, we are able to reduce the length of the leakage path between the rotors.
As the pressure increases so will the radial force. It may be necessary to introduce bearings to the pump. With the addition of bearings it may also be possible to increase the rotational speed of the screws. The greater momentum of the fluid through the pump at increased speed would be in direct opposition to the back leakage caused by the pressure differential. As well as increasing efficiency, higher speeds would reduce the size of the rotors and therefore the overall dimensions of the pump.
