Annually UK Industry uses 10TW of electricity to compress air which is approximately 10% of all Industrial energy usage (Carbon Trust). Machines to compress the air require oil lubrication which contaminate the air, resulting in environmental consequences as well as extra costs to remove the contaminants.
Rotor Design Solutions Ltd (RDS) have a patent pending on a new design concept for screw rotors that will allow water to be used instead of oil, resulting in lower operating costs and reduced pollution. The RDS concept can be added to OEM current rotor designs, with no requirement for a machine re-design and there is no added cost to manufacture the rotor set. The concept has clear environmental benefits and is complementary to other emerging technologies, including rotor surface coating, rotor profile design and lubricant chemistry.
Our initial proof of concept is being co-funded by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK. The work is progressing well, and we are now looking to the future beyond the initial project end of April 2019. We are actively seeking a compressor manufacturer who may be interested in conducting some experimental studies to explore the potential of our concept.
